The... 3rd post
The Sheriff begins with his thoughts once more. He began to reminisce about the first days as his job as sheriff and the conflicts that he dealt with. Before they were just quarrels between people that would end in things such as a fistfight between a couple of, most likely drunk, guys. Now this job has taken on a more dangerous role as he starts to confront people with no problem with shooting at a sheriff. He talked of an experience where a man pulled a gun on him and would've shot him if he hadn't grabbed it before as the man went to fire. He talks about another experience where he went to pull over a truck and there were two boys in the back who were passed shotguns, forcing the sheriff to drive into a ditch. He explains how nowadays, "You walk up to a car and you don't know what you're liable to find." He also talks about seeing terrible things in the newspapers about boys killing people for now good reason. All the crimes and violence we see on the news today is the same thing that was happening in the time of the book.
